Jay (Jacob) Schleichkorn, a native New Yorker, served in the Air Force for three years, primarily as a Physical Therapy Technician. Upon his discharge in 1946, he chose physical therapy as a career and received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy and a Masters of Arts from New York University. Joining the Air Force Reserve in October 1959, as a physical therapist with the rank of Captain, he served until 1978 and was discharged with total service of 22 years, with the rank of Lt. Colonel.

In 1982, he completed his doctorate in Developmental Disabilities
from The Union Institute, Cincinnati. After several clinical positions as a physical therapist, from 1959 to 1971, he was the executive director of the United Cerebral Palsy Associations of New York State. He followed that from 1971 through 1987 as the founder and Associate Professor and Chairman of the Physical Therapy Department, School of Allied Health Professions, State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Upon his retirement, he was named Associate Professor Emeritus, SUNY Stony Brook. Jay and his wife, Marianne, moved to Central Florida in 1989. A life member of the American Physical Therapy Association, he was appointed to APTA's Committee on History 1993 through 1996 and served as Chair of the Committee in 1996. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the APTA's Lucy Blair Service Award (1984) and the Helen Hislop Award for Outstanding Contributions to Professional Literature (1992).

He is the author of five books of which four were historical biographies and one on cerebral palsy.

Dr. Schleichkorn is an Honorary Member of the Neuro-developmental Treatment Association (NDT) and in 1991 was the recipient of the NDTA's Bobath Award of Excellence.

From 1987-1999, he served as consulting editor and feature writer for the PT Bulletin, a weekly publication of the APTA. Many of his articles emphasized the role of those therapists considered pioneers in the profession.

In the summer of 2000, he was called from retirement to join the faculty of the Physical Therapy program, University of Central Florida, Orlando. As an Adjunct Professor, he taught Foundations of Physical Therapy. He was a part-time faculty in the summer of 2001 and in February 2002, he was designated a Distinguished Scholar in Residence in the Physical Therapy Program, Department of Health Professions at UCF. He also received an appointment as a Coordinator in the physical therapy program effective August 19, 2002. Concurrently he serves on the Advisory Board for the Program in Physical Therapy .

Jay and Marianne Schleichkorn, now of Apopka, Florida, have three
sons, three daughter-in-laws and seven grandchildren.
